Hair Brushing 101

Hairbrushes have been around as long as hair itself. Ok, well, almost. After early man got tired of picking and grooming by hand, and learned how to make and use tools, the hairbrush came into being. The very first people known to use the hairbrush, is a mystery. But earliest accounts point to Romans and Greeks. Egyptian peoples made combs of bone, and hairbrushes of animal hair. The Vikings had wild heads of hair to tame with crude brushes. The history and development of brushes has come a long way and changed with time and technology.

William Kent began producing hand made hairbrushes in England in 1777. These brushes were painstakingly crafted by up to twelve people for one little brush! Kent Brushes is one of the oldest companies in the UK and makes over 250 different types of brushes today. www.kentbrushes.com

In 1885, Mason Pearson automated brush production, and revolutionized brush making. These brushes were first to feature a rubber cushion pad combined with natural boar bristle. This allows the brush to gently massage the scalp and spread natural oils throughout the hair. This actually cleans and polishes the hair! This is the brush that grandmothers always told us that 100 strokes will make your hair shiny and soft. I can confirm this, and strongly recommend picking one up. I recommend the “Popular”. It has both Boar and Nylon bristles and is a perfect size. www.masonpearson.com

With the addition of a few American brush manufacturers like Hugh Rock, Samuel Firey, and Alfred Fuller hairbrushes were ushered into a modern age. Now, brushes come in different sizes and shapes, with as many different functions and uses. Round brushes are mostly used to volumize hair, and add wave or curl. Ceramic round brushes can be heated and used like an iron barrel to set curls. Flat brushes are used to straighten hair or to dry hair quickly. There are paddle brushes, and vented brushes in either case. Overall brushes are mostly used to control the hair while drying.

As a stylist or an everyday woman the brush should be viewed as a trusted friend, an everyday tool, even an extension of the hand in some cases. To control hair while drying is essential. Ideally hair should be pulled taught, with tension, and dried completely. This will smooth the hair and eliminate frizz. If you dry your hair with tension around a circular object (brush, iron, roller, or beer can), you will have a smoothe curl. If you pull your hair tightly straight out, you will have smooth and straight hair. It’s almost that simple.

"Texturista" - PLEASE VOTE for this future award winning look!

"What's Next Awards" - Fierce Texture Look

These photo's expose a universally hot new look created by Shawn Michael from Intermezzo Salon. This look is titled "texturista" and will be submitted for voting in Sebastian Professional hair products "What's Next Awards" http://www.whatsnextawards.com/vote. Sposored by Blackbook Magazine, stylists have a chance to win exposure in Blackbook, and a trip to NY Fashion week to style for a special event!

In this design the hair is shaped with Sahag influenced dry cutting style. This look “Texturista”, is created for an everyday style and is full of movement and flow. This is a balanced shape with incredibly fierce texture that is versatile for day or night.

“Texturista” was styled with Sebastian Professional products. RE-SHAPER was used before blowdrying for volume boost, and for finishing with a flexible “tossed” look. And, MICROWEB FIBER was used in dry hair to give massive texture and separation for that “what’s next” look.

Please vote for this look at the link above if you love it as much as we do at Intermezzo Salon.

Lauryn Grinnell - Featured Stylist - Intermezzo Salon and Spa

Lauryn Grinnell is a Seattle Native and featured stylist at Intermezzo Salon and Spa. She recently had the pleasure of working for Katy Perry in her 2009 Bumbershoot Festival. (above)

http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/09/06/sheryl-crow-de-la-soul-katy-perry-kick-off-bumbershoot/

Lauryn was asked about her fashion influences, inspirations, and education related to her art of hairstyling, and how her knowledge and talent can give everyday people the look they love to have!
Here's what she said:

“My passion for style began at a very young age. I have had an obsession for hair, make-up, and unique fashion for well over twenty-five years. My inspiration is eclectic and comes from music, different cultures, my four year old daughter, and simply day to day fashion trends of both men and women. I have a keen eye for detail and always envision how I can boost your self confidence through my art.

As a stylist my goal is to make you look and feel amazing. I do so through my specialties in both cutting and color. I customize hairstyles that compliment your facial structure. I create balanced shapes, and detail my work on dry hair in order to see layers and take out weight, without leaving notches or lines. I specialize in thermal straightening, bridal, and event styling as well.

My advanced training came from a Sebastian platform artist of 15years, with whom I specialized in an amazing foil highlighting technique. This method allows me to create a very naturally balanced, seamless blonde with a less noticeable grow out. I guarantee you will love the outcome.

For me, styling hair is the cherry on top. As a product educator for Kevin Murphy, I really enjoy teaching. My job as a stylist is not only to give you amazing results but to teach you what, why, and how to use products and hot tools to create the look you desire.

Please come and see me for any hair service, I look forward to working with you in the future and building a lasting relationship as your stylist by helping you look and feel amazing."

Hallelujah for the flat iron!

Hopefully this will never happen to you. Two teen girls, let’s just call them “big bang” Betty and “small fry” Betty, to protect the innocent, are excited for the big school game. Both of them were looking for a knock out hairstyle, and they wanted something different. Keep in mind this was back in the time when big perms and mall bangs were popular and they had both. But let’s just say for the sake of relevance, their hair was chemically treated and potentially fragile. To be different, the Betties wanted to be super straight and silky smooth. This was not so simple since the styling flat iron was not yet widely used by the public. But “big bang” Betty’s sister said “I know how to get it straight. We will iron it.” And by iron she meant press Dad’s shirt, iron. We’re talking cook a grilled cheese, iron.

So the ironing begins. The first sign of trouble was when the girls laid down on a towel on the kitchen table, and spread their hair out like a fan. Then came the coating of the awe inspiring Aqua Net. And then the heat begins. But the Betties could not have been happier with their results. Their hair was straighter than any girl at school. It was shiny and smooth. And they were movie stars at the game that night. You could say that “they turned heads”.

The next day when they washed and dried their hair, their long spiral permed hair had tightened up. The curls shrank as if the Betties had put their fingers in a light socket. Maximum “fryage”. Their hair, which was originally mid length curls down their backs, was more like chin length and frizzy. It looked more like Don King than anything else. Not good. And then, there was the crying breakdown.

Then came the solution. “Let’s just do a VO5 hot oil treatment” they said. But the only drawback was that they did not have any VO5 hot oil. So, they decided to heat up some Wesson vegetable oil on the stove. (Do not try this at home. In fact DO NOT TRY THIS EVER!) When they applied the oil it had not cooled and the poor girls were mildly burned at the scalp. Enough that there was even some light blistering. Ultimately the “oil treatment” did nothing but burns the Betties, and make for a good story. Their hair was totally fried and, no recovery was possible. The only thing these poor “movie stars” could do was watch their hair break off as quickly as it could grow. Eventually they were left with mini pony tails and frizzy flyaways for more than a year.

They moral to this story, girls, is let a professional take care of you hair. Enjoy styling and playing with your hair. But unless you are experienced, do not cut your own hair or perform any chemical services on yourself or your friends. Certainly do not iron your hair with your mothers clothing iron and put hot vegetable oil on it.
