"Texturista" - PLEASE VOTE for this future award winning look!

"What's Next Awards" - Fierce Texture Look

These photo's expose a universally hot new look created by Shawn Michael from Intermezzo Salon. This look is titled "texturista" and will be submitted for voting in Sebastian Professional hair products "What's Next Awards" http://www.whatsnextawards.com/vote. Sposored by Blackbook Magazine, stylists have a chance to win exposure in Blackbook, and a trip to NY Fashion week to style for a special event!

In this design the hair is shaped with Sahag influenced dry cutting style. This look “Texturista”, is created for an everyday style and is full of movement and flow. This is a balanced shape with incredibly fierce texture that is versatile for day or night.

“Texturista” was styled with Sebastian Professional products. RE-SHAPER was used before blowdrying for volume boost, and for finishing with a flexible “tossed” look. And, MICROWEB FIBER was used in dry hair to give massive texture and separation for that “what’s next” look.

Please vote for this look at the link above if you love it as much as we do at Intermezzo Salon.

Lauryn Grinnell - Featured Stylist - Intermezzo Salon and Spa

Lauryn Grinnell is a Seattle Native and featured stylist at Intermezzo Salon and Spa. She recently had the pleasure of working for Katy Perry in her 2009 Bumbershoot Festival. (above)

http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/09/06/sheryl-crow-de-la-soul-katy-perry-kick-off-bumbershoot/

Lauryn was asked about her fashion influences, inspirations, and education related to her art of hairstyling, and how her knowledge and talent can give everyday people the look they love to have!
Here's what she said:

“My passion for style began at a very young age. I have had an obsession for hair, make-up, and unique fashion for well over twenty-five years. My inspiration is eclectic and comes from music, different cultures, my four year old daughter, and simply day to day fashion trends of both men and women. I have a keen eye for detail and always envision how I can boost your self confidence through my art.

As a stylist my goal is to make you look and feel amazing. I do so through my specialties in both cutting and color. I customize hairstyles that compliment your facial structure. I create balanced shapes, and detail my work on dry hair in order to see layers and take out weight, without leaving notches or lines. I specialize in thermal straightening, bridal, and event styling as well.

My advanced training came from a Sebastian platform artist of 15years, with whom I specialized in an amazing foil highlighting technique. This method allows me to create a very naturally balanced, seamless blonde with a less noticeable grow out. I guarantee you will love the outcome.

For me, styling hair is the cherry on top. As a product educator for Kevin Murphy, I really enjoy teaching. My job as a stylist is not only to give you amazing results but to teach you what, why, and how to use products and hot tools to create the look you desire.

Please come and see me for any hair service, I look forward to working with you in the future and building a lasting relationship as your stylist by helping you look and feel amazing."

Hallelujah for the flat iron!

Hopefully this will never happen to you. Two teen girls, let’s just call them “big bang” Betty and “small fry” Betty, to protect the innocent, are excited for the big school game. Both of them were looking for a knock out hairstyle, and they wanted something different. Keep in mind this was back in the time when big perms and mall bangs were popular and they had both. But let’s just say for the sake of relevance, their hair was chemically treated and potentially fragile. To be different, the Betties wanted to be super straight and silky smooth. This was not so simple since the styling flat iron was not yet widely used by the public. But “big bang” Betty’s sister said “I know how to get it straight. We will iron it.” And by iron she meant press Dad’s shirt, iron. We’re talking cook a grilled cheese, iron.

So the ironing begins. The first sign of trouble was when the girls laid down on a towel on the kitchen table, and spread their hair out like a fan. Then came the coating of the awe inspiring Aqua Net. And then the heat begins. But the Betties could not have been happier with their results. Their hair was straighter than any girl at school. It was shiny and smooth. And they were movie stars at the game that night. You could say that “they turned heads”.

The next day when they washed and dried their hair, their long spiral permed hair had tightened up. The curls shrank as if the Betties had put their fingers in a light socket. Maximum “fryage”. Their hair, which was originally mid length curls down their backs, was more like chin length and frizzy. It looked more like Don King than anything else. Not good. And then, there was the crying breakdown.

Then came the solution. “Let’s just do a VO5 hot oil treatment” they said. But the only drawback was that they did not have any VO5 hot oil. So, they decided to heat up some Wesson vegetable oil on the stove. (Do not try this at home. In fact DO NOT TRY THIS EVER!) When they applied the oil it had not cooled and the poor girls were mildly burned at the scalp. Enough that there was even some light blistering. Ultimately the “oil treatment” did nothing but burns the Betties, and make for a good story. Their hair was totally fried and, no recovery was possible. The only thing these poor “movie stars” could do was watch their hair break off as quickly as it could grow. Eventually they were left with mini pony tails and frizzy flyaways for more than a year.

They moral to this story, girls, is let a professional take care of you hair. Enjoy styling and playing with your hair. But unless you are experienced, do not cut your own hair or perform any chemical services on yourself or your friends. Certainly do not iron your hair with your mothers clothing iron and put hot vegetable oil on it.

Color That Lasts

Salon quality permanent and semi-permanent color is designed to last, if maintained properly. In this short lesson, I will explain how to care for your hair and keep your color rich and vibrant. There are three basic things that make haircolor fade. They are, the sun, hot water, and shampooing. First and foremost in the summer, is the sun. As we all know the sun has incredible bleaching power. Take, for example, fabrics left in the sun without any shade or protection. They fade quickly.

To protect your haircolor from the sun, you can do two things. One, you use hair products with sunscreen. Some product lines have specially designed shampoo and conditioner containing sunscreens. Other lines use styling products that offer UV protection. At Intermezzo we carry L’oreal professional’s Solar Sublime shampoo, conditioner, and a leave-in spray conditioner with UV protection. We also offer Kevin Murphy’s Motion Lotion, a styling product that smoothes and adds dimension to your hair while offering protection from those nasty little UV rays, that we love to hate, and hate to love. Secondly, the only other thing you can do to protect your hair from the summer sun, is stay in the shade. Just like your skin, hair needs to be protected from harsh rays with products, clothing, or anything that provides shade. So if you do not have a lovely summer sun hat, come see our hair professionals, and let us help you choose a product that is perfect for you.

Another thing that makes you color fade is how you wash and maintain your hair. If you color your hair you should certainly use a color safe shampoo and conditioner, and use lukewarm water. Think about it like this, shampoos are designed to “strip” dirt and impurities from your hair with sulfates, and let the water rinse them away. Color safe shampoos are designed to clean your hair without sulfates, and so do not strip color. I personally recommend Davines Nou Nou color safe shampoo and conditioner. Imported from Italy, this beauty contains tomato extract, vitamin F, and Rhizobian gum, to maintain vibrancy. This shampoo cleans well, and does not leave your hair feeling stripped or looking faded. We also offer L’oreal professionals Vitamino Color for color treated hair. And one of the most overlooked elements of washing colored hair is the water temperature. Hot water can seriously pull color out of your hair. If it’s steaming, it’s too hot. Ok, I know some of us like to take hot showers (mostly in the colder months). I recommend that you feel free to warm your body with a hot shower, but when you want to wash or rinse your hair, turn the water temperature down. Then you can have the best showers without compromising the haircolor that you and your stylist have worked so hard to perfect!

And for you special people out there who swim in a chlorinated body of water, like a pool or Jacuzzi/hot tub, yes, chlorine will fade your color. It will also take your blondes from bright to dingy and greenish. What I tell clients to do is saturate your hair with fresh water and conditioner, and cover it with a swimming cap. Hair is like a sponge. It will absorb what you give it. So if you “fill” it with good stuff, the bad stuff cannot get in. Then you can just rinse away the conditioners when you are done.

With these simple rules of thumb you can add life to your color, and maintain its brightness, and vibrancy, long after your visit to Intermezzo Salon and Spa. Please feel free to comment or respond with any questions. Or, you can contact me directly or make an appointment for a free consultation.

Stay Bright!

Summer Smoothers

The Battle of the Summer Smoothers

Everyone needs a good summer product to tame frizz and control flyaways. We feature two great product lines at Intermezzo Salon.
Kevin Murphy is from Australia and Davines is from Italy.

When appropriate, I use Kevin Murphy’s “Leave-in Luxury”, “Body Guard”, and “Easy Rider”. First up is a “leave-in” conditioner. I also use it as a great, lightweight styling product for blowouts, or flat ironing. “Leave-in Luxury” will enhance curly or straight hair while it hydrates conditions, and most importantly controls frizz! Second, “Body Guard” is a very lightweight smoother, for fine hair. It will protect against heat damage as well. And if you are both, a little bit country AND a little bit rock-n-roll, “Easy Rider” will tempt your product palate. This line is not for lack of attractive packaging too, in a good way. And, Kevin Murphy is a very environmentally conscious product line using CFC “buyback” programs, recyclable bottles, and sustainable business practices.

Davines on the other hand boasts their Defining line. http://www.davines.com/home.html
Defining Relaxing Fluid is a powerhouse smoother with a lightweight touch. It smoothes, shines, and protects. This product contains high quality silicones to tame your hair and add brilliance. And it contains extracts that hydrate and replenish your hair. Another smoother and flyaway buster, which fits in your purse, is MOMO Anti-aging daily cream. Like hand lotion for your hair, this elixir is best applied to dry hair. This makes it a great "on the go smoother". With walnut extract and jojoba oil, it also protects your hair from sun and pollution.

With summer temperatures, and humid environments, products can make a big difference. Even if you break down and pull back a pony, and call it quits, a little hairspray never hurt. Davines Defining Invisible Hair Spray is my favorite. With cucumber extract it moisturizes and hydrates. In addition, it’s a workable hairspray that does not build up, and resists humidity.

Rest assured there is a product and solution to any frizz and flyaway combo you can dream up. No more nightmares, visit me at Intermezzo Salon and Spa for a free consultation and styling treatment recommendation, and make your summer silky, soft and smooth.

FACE Charity auction results in!!!

FACE’s 2nd annual event was a huge success and we have you to thank! Not only did we exceed our financial goals but we've been receiving rave reviews from everyone who attended the event on April 30th, 2009.

We’d like to extend our sincerest thanks to both our attendees and volunteers for the success of the event. We raised almost $30,000 net proceeds for Sunflower Children! Our children at both our schools, Future Hope and Island of Hope, cannot thank you enough for your generosity. These schools are made up of children, ranging in ages 3-11 from impoverished families, who would not be able to attend school without the support of this event. Your donations will continue to provide each student with an education, clothing, school supplies, one meal a day and help them grow with hope for a brighter future.

The show was certainly the highlight of the evening. We couldn’t have done it without Barney’s NY. We are also so grateful to Young’s Columbia for pouring all of that fabulous wine, Caffe Vita for the coffee and Via Tribunali for the pizza! Other highlights were the trips to Napa, San Francisco and Hawaii, the “Valentino, the Last Emperor” private screening (which is an incredible movie!), and all of the additional wonderful items that were auctioned off.
We would also like to thank our sponsors for their generous contributions to FACE. They include our title sponsor Caffe Vita, Barney’s NY, Direct Mail Design, Heffner Management, Seattle Models Guild, TCM Models, Intermezzo Salon and Spa, Young’s Columbia, Seattle Metropolitan, Kibble and Prentice, Printing Control, Herban Feast, Seattle Chocolates, Jones Soda, Impact Law Group and Proline/Avidex.We have some great photos of the event! If you took any photos please forward them on as we would love to add them to our gallery. Thank you so much for your support and we look forward to seeing you next year!
